Daily Duties: Will assist with general production duties Dry cast area and make concrete structures including concrete panels (used along highways, bridges, etc.), flared ends (large gutters), side walls, and custom forms. There are 3 divisions on the floor: wet cast, dry cast, and panel intake within both of their East and West plants. Must be open to cross training and working on different projects and locations when needed.
Best way to describe the product they are making: Ever seen the move "IT"? The sewer system they walk through in that movie are the concrete parts they make here. Make storm runover concrete parts, wall panels on interstates and is a specialty precast plant.
Drycast at West Des Moines- Foreman, Caleb: Make boxed culverts (piping for rivers/streams) out of dry, packable concrete mix. This area makes one type of product and is very process oriented. The crew is spread out with each person having their own specific role.
This work is very process oriented position - each step of the process needs to be done in the correct order to get the product completed efficiently. Candidates need to be okay with being told what to do from management until they learn the process.
Labor intensive work - must be comfortable lifting up to 50lbs.
This is dirty work - must be comfortable getting dirty and especially sweaty and hot in the summers. VERY similar to construction work. Make sure candidates are locked down on this.
Will read blueprint drawings and must be proficient with hand tools and tape measure. Candidates must be very comfortable measuring to a 16th of an inch.
Will work in the yard and assist with general labor work.
West Plant will manufacture 100-120 structures of the same product but in high volumes vs the East plant manufactures more custom project needs Cross train people within both plants to give equal opportunities for both locations. If there is a leadership opportunity open up at a different plant candidates will have an equal opportunity to transfer there. There have been situations where crews have to be open to either plants if projects arise and they would need to flexible with commuting from West Des Moines/Valley Junction area to East Des Moines.
West Des Moines -typically does have layoffs in the winter and sometimes will help out at East Plant if they have a busy need. Normally the layoff is for 1 month.
Everyone on the floor is trained on both the overhead cranes and forklift with time.
