RFA Engineering Embedded Systems Software Engineer in Waterloo, Iowa

RFA Engineering (www.rfamec.com) is seeking several growth oriented, experienced candidates to be part of our engineering team in the Waterloo, Iowa area. You will work with our engineering staff to provide highly engineered software solutions for our clients using state of the art engineering tools.

Embedded Systems Software Engineer

This position is associated with the design of high level software architecture and software requirements for electromechanical/electrohydraulic subsystems for agricultural equipment.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Plans, coordinates, performs product design, testing and/or analysis work for a complete project of moderate scope or for a significant portion or a sub-system of a major and diverse project.

  • Create AUTOSAR compliant software architectures for specific electrohydraulic subsystems.

  • Enter software architecture into PREEvision and ensure guidelines and naming conventions are followed.

  • Verify that the designed software architecture meets the high level subsystem requirements.

  • Create software requirements for the software components defined in the software architecture.

  • Conduct software architecture and requirements reviews and document results.

  • Operates in a team environment, providing input to design solutions and participating in design reviews.

  • May assign, coordinate and review portions of the work to support personnel. Decisions are made within established guidelines and may be reviewed by supervisors.

  • Duties: Executes high level applications to more complex problems.

  • Analyzes assignments and determines engineering specifications which must be fulfilled for complex problems or projects of moderate scope.

  • Produces and/or evaluates possible design solutions to improve cost, quality and performance based on specialized knowledge of engineering applications. This may include possible involvement of other functional engineers, supply management and/or supplier personnel.

  • Compiles and furnishes necessary information (engineering decisions and reports of pertinent design analyses data) to document the design solution required for building of prototypes and adoption of the design with possible involvement of other functional engineers, supply management and/or supplier personnel.

  • Provides technical support to marketing, manufacturing, quality and supply management organizations.

  • Develops and/or executes test or analysis plan for product verification and validation.

  • Applies knowledge of company products, policies and practices to provide economies through standardization of parts and products.


  • Bachelor's of Science degree in Electrical, Computer, Software Engineering or Computer Science.

  • 4+ years software architect experience

  • 3+ years embedded software development for embedded microcontrollers in mobile applications

  • Experience with Model Based Software Design (MBSD) and/or system simulation (Matlab, Simulink, Stateflow)

  • Experience with AUTOSAR authoring tools like PREEvision, DaVinci Developer, etc.

  • Experience working in mechatronics; this includes a solid understanding of electrical and electronics, hydraulics, and mechanical systems.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to thrive in a team environment

Desired Attributes

  • General machine knowledge of industrial equipment or machinery

  • Knowledge of vehicle networks and protocols (CAN, J1939, ISOBUS, LIN)

  • Technical experience relating to design, diagnostics of mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic systems.

  • Product engineering experience
