ELECTRICIAN

This job performs mater of journey level electrician work and leads incarcerated workers in the construction of affordable housing with Homes of Iowa. Ensures policies regarding discipline, safety and security are followed consistently. Plans, assigns and directs incarcerated individuals in work task completion steps so that affordable homes are well constructed and completed in a timely fashion. Conducts classroom, laboratory , and hands on training for incarcerated individuals providing related training instructions as part of US Dept. of Labor registered apprenticeship programs. Troubleshoots and makes repairs to equipment and tools.

Reads and interprets blueprints, diagrams, sketches and other guidelines pertaining to building and electrical trades work. Initiates purchase orders for replacement parts and supplies. Plans and lays out work, develops estimates and maintains records associated with building and electrical trades work. Pat search incarcerated individuals upon their arrival and departure, to/from their work area throughout the work day. Communicate issues to Supervisor. Attend meetings and training.

Hours of work are Monday through Thursday 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • Three years of full-time work experience in skilled electrical work in the construction or repair of residential or commercial buildings.

  • Successful completion of a standard electrician program at an accredited trade school.

  • A total of three years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where one semester of an approved trade school electrician program is equivalent to six months of full-time experience.

  • Successful completion of three years of an approved electrician apprenticeship program.

  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes two years of full-time work as a Trades Helper which involved electrical duties.

Additional Qualification Requirements

Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority, persons in this class may be required to obtain a license to perform electrical work in accordance with Iowa Code Chapter 103.

Designated positions in this class require possession of a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire. Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority, a valid Commercial Driver's License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and subsequently maintained to continue employment.
