Two immediate openings for Sewer Maintenance Worker I for the City of Marshalltown.General Statement of Duties:-Performs manual labor to maintain, repair, and construct the City's sanitary and storm sewer systems; performs general maintenance onequipment; operates dump trucks and sanding equipment to assist in snow removal operations; performs related work as required.Distinguishing Features of the Class:This is responsible skilled work for the maintenance, repair, and construction of the City's sanitary and storm sewer systems and for the general maintenance of departmental equipment. The work is performed under the general direction and supervision of the SewerSuperintendent but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain close cooperative working relationships with all other departmental employees, other City employees, and the general public.Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only):- Performs general construction, repair, and replacement of sanitary sewer lines, storm sewer lines, catch basins, and manholes;- Performs concrete work relating to the repair of City streets and sidewalks after sewer repairs are made;- Operates a dump truck to haul materials such as sewer pipe, sand, and rock;- Operates a wide variety of light equipment and hand and power tools;- Assists in the cleaning and televising of sanitary sewer lines, including the setup of the Jet/Vac and TV truck and the operation ofthe Jet Truck as part of the televising operation;- Cleans catch basins, grates, and storm sewers;- Plows snow and sands streets to assist the Street Division;- Sets up and operates pumps during heavy rains;- Performs plumbing, carpentry, and other general duties in maintenance of facilities and equipment;- Assists in lift station maintenance;- Provides sewer locates, inspections, and assists in sewer system studies;- Attends meetings, conferences, and workshops as requested and authorized;- Performs related work as required.Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Thorough understanding of confined space safety requirements, trenching safety, traffic safety, and construction and motorizedequipment safety practices and procedures;- Good knowledge of the mechanical operation and maintenance of equipment;- Good knowledge of construction principles, maintenance, and repair activities as they relate to the construction, repair, andreplacement of sanitary sewer lines, storm sewer lines, catch basins, manholes, and the repair of City streets and sidewalks aftersewer repairs are made;- Ability to read engineering drawings and maps;- Ability to communicate well with others using both technical and non-technical language;- Good knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, and other general duties in the maintenance of facilities and equipment;- Ability to operate construction and maintenance equipment;- Ability to use hand and power tools;- Ability to operate, maintain, and make minor repairs to equipment;- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department personnel, supervisory personnel,supervisory personnel, and volunteers;- Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oralinstructions;- Ability to perform a wide variety of construction, maintenance, and repair tasks with accuracy and speed under the pressure oftime-sensitive deadlines- Ability to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/ortechnology;- Ability to exercise ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks;- Ability to consistently maintain regular and punctual attendance at work;- Ability to work hours during the weekend, evenings, holidays, overtime, and be called out.- Ability to communicate in English.Acceptable Experience and Training- Graduation from high school
