The lab studies immune responses to influenza virus and pathologic coronaviruses using mouse models and samples obtained from human subjects. The work includes analysis of immune responses in the lung, assessment of demyelination in the central nervous system and ex vivo immunological assays. Responsibilities include mouse husbandry, conducting research activities/experiments, collecting, analyzing and summarizing data, preparing reports and contributing to research presentations, manuscripts/publications and grant applications, administrative and project management, maintaining the overall function of the laboratory through management of supplies, facilities and equipment, and supervision/staffing of laboratory personnel.KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITYResearch:Perform mouse husbandry, including breeding, screening and genotyping.Perform research activities in immunology and microbiology (specifically virology). This includes contributing to the planning of experiments, executing protocols developed by other research staff or the principal investigator(s) and adapting and performing protocols from the literature.Critically review literature for the purposes of furthering the research and developing newhypotheses in conjunction with the principal investigator. This includes performing literature searches as well as reading and reviewing articles.Experiments, Investigations, Evaluations:Perform basic and complex procedures and techniques as outlined in research protocol, assuring fidelity to protocols. Specifically, experiments will include collection of lymphoid tissue and purification of leukocytes, performing basic cellular and molecular biology assays (DNA and RNA purification, PCR, Western blots, cell culture), production of the mouse-adapted virus used in the animal models, performing animal models (infection, monitoring, tissue collection), processing human samples, tissue culture and flow cytometry (staining, analysis).May propose modifications to protocols and/or assist in the design of experiment protocols and design portions of experimental plan.Monitor, test and evaluate current procedures.Track progress of research activities.Identify and adhere to Quality Assurance practices to maintain validity and integrity of research data.Apply new methods/theories.Collect, Analyze and Summarize Data; Prepare Reports; Contribute to Manuscripts, Publications:Collect and track, perform data entry and maintain records of methods used.Prepare materials for reports.May perform statistical analysis of data and qualitative analysis.Assist in the design of manuals, questionnaires, and forms.Assist in preparing publications and presentations.May contribute to the technical writing of papers, manuscripts, and published materials as evidenced by documented recognition.Present results/finds at team and departmental meetings; may present at local and national meetings.Administrative and Project Management:Make recommendations regarding the validity of research subjects and data.Submit routine IRB and IACUC protocols.Responsible for safety programs by following guidelines and maintaining required documentation in support of safety programs and compliance with regulatory guidelines.Facilities and Equipment Management:Maintain a neat and orderly working environment.Coordinate procurement and organization of supplies and materials, including initiation of purchasing requests, monitoring of accounts and expenditures and reconciling statements.Coordinate and manage equipment and
