The Medical Laboratory Technician, under the direction of the Laboratory Manager and Team Leader, is responsible for collecting, performing and analyzing laboratory tests in hematology, blood bank, special chemistry, chemistry, arterial blood gases, serology and microbiology to provide information for diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Performs all moderate complexity tests that are offered in this laboratory and has a degree of skill commensurate with the individuals' education, training or experience, and technical abilities. Follows the laboratory's procedures for specimen procurement, handling and processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results. Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency-testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples. Adheres to the laboratory quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed. Follows the laboratory's established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance. Is capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance in reporting of test results and either must correct the problems, or immediately notify the lead technologist or laboratory manager. Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
Associate’s degree as a Medical Laboratory Technician.
Certified or ability obtain certification within 6 months of hire by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or equivalent.
