Job Description

The Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs is looking to fill a Interpretive Panel Development for Matthew Edel Blacksmith Shop (Administrative Intern) to assist the state.

This is a Non-Paid Intership.

Internship Purpose and Goals

  • Assist in the development of new interpretive signage for the Matthew Edel Blacksmith Shop historic site located in Haverhill, Iowa. These panels will focus on three overarching themes in Iowa history and how each influenced the lives and work of Matthew Edel and his family.

  • This project will be a significant contribution to the site and its visitors.

  • The final product will better interpret the site’s history, making it more accessible to the general public.

Time Commitment

  • Duration: Spring Semester

  • Frequency: Minimum of ­­8 hours per week, unpaid.

  • Hours must be completed Monday-Friday, 9:00 am – 4:30 pm.

Duties and Essential Activities

  • Conduct historical research on blacksmithing and the Edel family to place in context of Marshall County, the state of Iowa and the United States

  • Review historical photographs in SHSI Collections of Edel family, family life, and blacksmithing in the period 1875-1935.

  • Identify suitable photographs for use in exhibit panels.

  • Write draft exhibit panels on Edel family and blacksmithing in context of late 1870s to 1930s

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Pursuing a degree in U.S. History, American Studies, Public History, Museum Studies or other relevant degree program

  • Have an interest in historic sites, museums, and museum work.

  • Strong research skills are expected.

  • Ability to write concisely and clearly for general public

Ability to work independently and follow instructions

  • Must conduct oneself in a mature/professional manner and be able to work accurately and efficiently with minimal supervision.

Training

  • The selected intern will be asked to review basic principles of interpretation in Freeman Tilden’s Interpreting our Heritage, Beverly Serrell’s Exhibit Labels, The Gifts of Interpretation by Larry Beck and Ted T. Cable. and other brief materials as required to complete tasks.

  • The intern will be trained in research resources

  • The intern will be trained in writing museum labels and exhibit panels.

Department/Supervisor

  • The internship will be completed for the Matthew Edel Blacksmith Shop historic site which is part of the Historic Sites bureau of the State Historical Society of Iowa.

  • The internship will be supervised by the Historic Sites Manager.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants for positions in this class must be currently enrolled students in a degree program at an accredited educational institution, as determined by the Iowa Department of Administrative Services – Human Resources Enterprise.
