Principal Intern-Corporate Negotiations in Des Moines, Iowa

An internship with Sourcing and Supplier Management might be right for you.

The Global Sourcing Internship is the perfect opportunity to gain real world experience in a dynamic setting within Principal Financial Group. The location will be Des Moines, Iowa or remote for summer 2021, and the potential to continue with work of up to 40 hours per week through December 2021, if the internship is extended past the initial 3-month term of May/June through August 2021. This is dependent upon business needs and performance

In this internship role, you will have the opportunity to see a financial services organizations’ supply chain management function at work. You will:

Work on multiple large process improvement projects as determined by business needs.

Align with category & supplier management teams to assist in supplier management research projects as the business needs, and to understand the supplier lifecycle within our organization.

Consult with internal business customers by analyzing needs, researching best practices, and providing advice and guidance on the most effective negotiation strategy and purchasing methods.

You must be available to work full time in Des Moines, IA or remote from May/June-August 2021.


  • Currently pursuing or completed a degree in Supply Chain Management, Management Information Systems, Law or related major.

  • 3.0 required, 3.5 preferred GPA

  • Interest in procurement and/or supplier management.

  • Must be able to work in fast-paced environment and be able to meet deadlines.

  • Must be able to maintain a high degree of accuracy, be detail oriented and have excellent analytical, organizational, leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills

  • Candidates must possess strong computer skills including experience with MS Word and Excel.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Dual major in either Supply Chain Management or/and Management Information Systems.

  • Financial services industry knowledge, knowledge of sales techniques, finance, marketing and general business knowledge

  • Coursework completed in purchasing, business law, and management information systems

  • Ability to work independently and negotiate, persuade, and make quick decisions under pressure while dealing with conflicting goals and points of view

  • Experience and knowledge of Request for Proposals (RFPs)

  • Knowledge and/or experience with information technology, software and services procurement, supply chain management, contract negotiations, and/or contract law.

Internship location will be either onsite in Des Moines, IA or virtually from your location selection. Decisions on the location will be shared throughout the interview process.
