Summary

The incumbent performs a variety of duties and assignments related to the supervision of an assigned group of employees and is responsible for carrying out duties involving custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, and sanitation activities to ensure a safe and health environment for the treatment and care of our veterans. This position is located at the VA Central Iowa Health Care System.

Responsibilities

Major duties include, but are not limited to: Plans and organizes manpower utilization by making daily area routines, which outline daily and periodic duties required; Sets work priority, establishes quality control measures, communicates expectations, and assures acceptable performance and conduct of all direct reports; Assigns work to be performed by individuals or teams based on availability of equipment, staffing levels and materials required; Recommends personnel actions such as promotions, reassignment, awards, etc.; Assists with operations pertaining to equipment management; Ensures operations, maintenance and use of all EMS equipment is performed in accordance to EMS policy and manufacture's recommendations; Assists with equipment evaluation for procurement; Assures application of supplies and products used in all functions of EMS are done in accordance with EMS policy and manufacturer's recommendations; Supervises the cleaning of all portions of Non-Critical Reusable Medical Equipment, ensuring that cleaning and disinfecting is done in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and department standard operating procedures; Assures environment of care in all areas of the VACIHCS by submitting work orders for any structural or cosmetic damage, reporting unacceptable staff or patient activity and providing recommendation to the Assistant or Chief of EMS for any improvements that would enhance the general environment of care; Conducts routine and unannounced inspections of areas to assure acceptable levels of quality are met pertaining to EMS services provided; Documents deficiencies in accordance with established metrics and follows up to assure correction, providing oversight to sustainability of corrections; Performs housekeeping duties when appropriate, especially in the event of an emergency or in the absence of an adequate workforce. Work Schedule:

The basic workweek for this position is, Monday through Friday, 3:30 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. (evening shift). The incumbent may be assigned to other EMS Service tours of duty as required including 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (day shift) or 12:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. (night shift) as needed. Irregular or occasional overtime may be required to meet special project needs or requests for Environmental Management Services. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work of the position involves physical effort such as that involved in using vacuum cleaners and mopping operations and operating powered scrubbing machines and buffers. (Walking behind floor scrubber/buffers) Work involves continuous standing, squatting, stooping and reaching, frequent lifting and pushing. Pushes carts loaded with dirty laundry or waste, but lifts waste bags and laundry bags onto cart for transport. Required to lift and carry items weighing between 40 pounds rarely. Push or pull 1100 lbs laundry cart. Moving, set-up and working from ladders is required infrequently. Does trash removal, does high and low dusting, bed washing,. Uses ride-on floor scrubber. Works outside and inside. Could be exposed to short periods of extreme heat or cold. Reaching above shoulder (dusting, manipulating curtains, etc) - less 5% of day - once or twice daily. Must be able to squat and reach simultaneously when cleaning undersides of furniture, toilets, beds, etc. Incumbent works with chemicals which require appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves and googles. Incumbent may be exposed to occasional noise, skin irritations, cuts and bruises as well as vibration from heavy equipment and must be careful to avoid injury while using equipment and tools. Incumbent must be constantly aware of safety requirements and infection control practices.
