Principal Experienced Data Engineer (supporting US & Global offices) in Des Moines, Iowa

What you’ll do:

As an experienced Data Engineer in our Principal Global Investors (PGI)- Investment Data & Research team, you’ll assist in developing strategies for data acquisition and influence others within the business area to drive consistency, efficiency and innovate of policies, patterns and practices. This is an excellent role for someone who is passionate about helping build relationships with teams primarily in our Principal International (PI) office locations to help execute our data strategy! You'll work closely with technology teams in the US, Mexico, Chile, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Brazil and India.

Here are few examples of the kinds of things you’ll do:

  • Responsible for crafting data management process designs, models, and architectures.

  • Provide technical guidance to US and Principal International (PI) in-country team members on integration and functionality of infrastructure components.

  • Mature and modernize data practices & governance.

  • Facilitate discussions in relation to data between the PGI/PI program in-country team members, specific to integration patterns & desired architecture.

  • Contribute to PGI/PI program data strategy by sharing PI's data maturity knowledge and experience.

  • Build relationships and trust to communicate effectively across global data community, driving stronger connection to the Enterprise.

  • Demonstrate influence at the department level. Provide leadership, direction, and mentoring to teams.

  • Employ a variety of languages and tools (e.g. scripting languages, data movement tools) to marry systems together. Recommend ways to improve data reliability, efficiency and quality.

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Bachelor's degree plus 4+ years related work experience or a Master's in related field

  • Proven experience as an IT professional

  • Ability to work directly with data and datastores through programming language such as SQL, Python, Java, etc.

  • Experience building/operating systems for data extraction, ingestion and processing of large data sets

  • Experience building data products incrementally and integrating and managing datasets from multiple sources

  • Ability to collaborate well globally with others

  • Must be able to effectively communicate strategies and designs to all levels of the company

  • Knowledge of cloud platforms and surrounding ecosystems (Azure and/or AWS preferred)

Additional preferred technical experience:

  • Cloud data warehousing to support a range of personas and use cases (date engineers, data science, investment teams)

  • Data catalog/search engine/query mechanism to facilitate finding and graphing available data vendors/data points

  • Data exploration tools and techniques including visualization (PowerBI)

Hours/Travel

There will be some required off-hours that could consist of early mornings/late evenings in order to support our global offices. There will also eventually be some international travel required (15% approx.) with this role once traveling resumes.
