Adams County Secondary Road Maintenance SupervisorJob purposeUnder the general direction of the County Engineer, supervises a wide variety of maintenance and repair activities on county roads, bridges, and culverts; operates machinery when necessary; performs related work as required.Duties and responsibilitiesThe following duties are normal for this position. These duties are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.iInspects county roads and bridges taking notice of needed repairs or maintenance; consults with County Engineer about necessary repairs.iSupervises and inspects maintenance and repair projects performed by individual operators and crews; supervises maintenance of buildings and grounds.iServes as liaison with landowners seeking opinions on the work they want done.iEnsures the maintenance of proper inventories and directs repair of county vehicles and equipment.iAlerts maintenance crews for snow removal, flood damage, and other emergencies.iOversees the seeding and mowing of county property.iAnalyzes and resolves work problems or assists workers in solving problems.iInitiates or recommends personnel actions; approves overtime and maintains time and work records.iSupervises daily operations for safety of personnel, vehicles, and heavy equipment.QualificationsGraduation from high school or GED equivalent with five (5) years of progressively responsible highway maintenance work or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Must possess a valid Iowa Commercial Driveris LicenseKnowledge, Skills and AbilitiesExtensive knowledge of the practices, principles, materials, and equipment used in road, bridge, and culvert construction and maintenance. Awareness of safety regulations and health and safety risks.Capacity to operate county vehicles and heavy equipment. Ability to assign subordinates to tasks, instructs them in their work, and inspect work upon completion. Ability to maintain accurate records for personnel functions, inventory, and equipment. Needs to possess effective communication skills to allow for positive and productive interaction with the public and co-workers. Must be able to meet occasionally stressful project deadliness and make abrupt changes in priorities. CertificationMust possess a valid Iowa Commercial Driveris License.Working conditionsThe work environment will vary with duties that require office, indoor and outdoor work. Work outdoors can be expected at various times of the year under a variety of different weather situations including inclement weather as well as hot, cold, wet, dusty, dirty, noisy, fumy, snowy conditions. Hours may be irregular as this position is subject to call 24 hours/day as necessary for emergencies. Overtime compensation will be received subject to the FLSA. Compensation time may be taken at Maintenance Supervisoris discretion and with the Engineeris approval. Physical requirementsThe person in this position must be able to remain in a stationary position 25% of the time as well as occasionally moving about inside the office and courthouse to provide assistance to the Engineeris Office. Must be able to traverse uneven surfaces at road construction sites. Occasionally ascends/descends ladders to access construction equipment. Frequently positions self to supervise work, including under machinery and bridges. Occasional moving of up to 60 pounds required.
