Summary of Duties and Responsibilities
The Department of Animal Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University is seeking applications for a newly created Supervisor of Animal Science (ANS) IT unit. ANS IT supports the research, teaching, and extension missions of the department, including the USDA Meat Lab, and over ten off-site teaching and research farm locations. This position serves approximately 55 faculty, 75 staff, 90 graduate students,15 post-docs and 1,100 undergraduates. This position is the direct supervisor for the professional IT staff and students, and partners on large IT projects with CALS Admin IT and ITS.
This position is responsible for bridging the gap between the business operations of the department and the IT unit. They must understand and analyze the business needs of the department to plan, develop, and implement software and hardware needs to complete these initiatives. The position is primarily responsible for supervision and resource management; project management; and system support. Additional duties include software maintenance, engineering, and research. The position must understand databases and other computer systems, their requirements as well as their limitations, and determine where it’s appropriate to upgrade to newer technology or systems within budget. This position closely collaborates with CALS Admin IT on college-wide IT goals and projects.
The successful candidate will have strong supervisory skills; oral and written communication skills; and the ability to work with a diverse group of individuals to provide consultation with faculty and staff while delivering outstanding customer support, performing testing, and designing new systems. They will have strong analytical skills to interpret complex information from various sources and be able to determine the best way to move forward on projects. This position will also collaborate with the Chair of the ANS IT Work Committee. This position requires a high degree of confidentiality and will handle sensitive information.
