  • Position Summary

  • Under general supervision, performs specified duties on an assigned nursing in caring for adolescent through geriatric patients. Ensures all actions taken in carrying out responsibilities support patient centered care.

  • Utilizes handoff communication at shift change.

  • Monitors cardiac rhythms, documents rhythms hourly and heart rate. Runs rhythm strip at the beginning of every shift & analyzes rhythm. Nurses then analyze each rhythm and document on the cardiac rhythm record.

  • Reports changes in the cardiac rhythm immediately to the nurses caring for the patient. Runs strip of rhythm changes for nurses to analyze and document.

  • Maintains and cleans cardiac monitoring equipment. Informs Biomed when there is equipment malfunction. Discusses equipment malfunctions with clinical supervisor.

  • Verifies stock of needed supplies for cardiac monitoring, i.e. lead wires and batteries.

  • Cleans each telemetry pack/lead wires and inspects each pack for any damage after each patient use.

  • Organizes and cleans cardiac monitor screens/surface and desk area.

  • Performs specific duties as assigned: maintains and organizes bedside monitor equipment, completes quality control for Accuchecks, checks code cart every 11-7 shift, clerical duties, answers patient call lights and notifies staff when patient/family require assistance, and answers telephones.

  • Assists patients, families and visitors with various needs to enhance customer service. Utilizes safety practices in daily activities.

  • Participates in staff development and orientation of new staff.

  • Attends and participates in 50% of department unit meetings.

  • Completes required rhythm strips and annual test.

  • Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience

  • Required Qualifications (Including any licensure, certification, education):

  • Completion of basic EKG class with grade of at least 80%.

  • Mandatory Reporter training within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.

  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Highschool diploma or GED

  • Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Knowledge of computer skills related to cardiac monitoring within six weeks of hiring.

  • Ability to observe continual computerized monitoring of cardiac rhythms; to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; to make decisions quickly and respond in emergency situations; to handle confidential work with tact and discretion.

  • Ability to assist nursing personnel with patients; ability to understand and communicate oral and written English; explain procedures and give information; skill in the use of specialized equipment and/or techniques; ability to detect abnormal conditions and report appropriately; able to function promptly and appropriately under stressful conditions.

  • Ability to obtain clinical competence and knowledge of caring for adolescent through geriatric patients.

  • Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
