Job Description:

The Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS), at Iowa State University, is seeking qualified candidates for a Food Manufacturing Project Manager. The Project Manager will be responsible for advising, educating, and coaching small- to medium-sized food manufacturers throughout Iowa.

The Project Manager will serve as a statewide and national expert in their field. The Project Manager will provide state-wide services in a manufacturing-related field of their expertise. Specific expertise areas may include food processing, process control, management of food processing facilities, food safety systems, and/or other aspects of leading a food manufacturing business.

The successful candidate will possess demonstrated excellence in the manufacturing industry. Critical skills include project management; excellent verbal and written communication skills; interpersonal skills to develop trust with university administration, faculty, staff, clients and collaborators; exceptional critical thinking, analytic and problem-solving skills; advanced knowledge and skill to use a computer system and various business software tools; ability to deal with ambiguity; and strong time management skills. All staff members are expected to interact collegially and maintain the highest standards of integrity and ethical behavior.

A portion of this position is spent in a variety of businesses, on the production floor, in hazardous areas that require eye and hearing protection, often require physical protection (safety shoes, hard hats, etc.). The Specialist may be exposed to common industrial health hazards for varying periods of time, such as: chemical fumes, loud noise levels, dust, smoke, arc welding and laser light, moving machinery, and moving vehicles. A great deal of experience is often needed to closely interact with a manufacturing process and not be at risk. Conditions encountered may include temperatures in the 0F-120F range, noise levels in excess of 90 dBA, and the need to climb ladders. Extended driving, often under poor or dangerous conditions. Possible exposure to electronic equipment dangers (EMF).

The University is in the process of implementing a new classification and compensation structure. The impending change is expected to be completed by Fall 2020. Any P&S employee hired through this posting may be assigned a new title and associated pay grade upon the employment start date (and after the initial offer), commensurate with qualifications required for the position. The duties and responsibilities of the posted position, in addition to compensation offered, will not be affected by this process.
