Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Extension to Agriculture and Natural Resources with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Field Specialist – Farm Management. This position will be filled at the Field Specialist II or III level. Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension field specialists provide educational leadership in the application of knowledge, grounded in research-based science, to help Iowans and agricultural industry prosper.

Educational leadership responsibilities of this position will focus on all aspects of farm and agricultural business management and entrepreneurial activities. Program leadership areas include agricultural financial management; farm lease contracts and land management; economics of crop production; commodity marketing; accounting; development of value-added agricultural enterprises; business planning; risk management tools; and other farm management related program areas. In addition, this position will be part of the core farm management team and assist with statewide programming and area interdisciplinary team efforts. Program audiences include farmers, farm families, land owners, agricultural businesses, cooperatives, farm organizations, commodity groups, citizen organizations, community colleges, and mass media.

This position will participate in grant and contract opportunities and be active in revenue generation. Responsibilities of this position will also include entrepreneurial, collaborative, service and administrative functions with ISU. Subject matter leadership is provided through the ISU Department of Economics in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

In addition to duties above, a Field Specialist III will create and deliver comprehensive and complex interdisciplinary programming; conduct and analyzes needs assessment activities and identify, develop, and implement innovative and creative ways to meet clients’ needs; establishes, organizes, and facilitates networks and coalitions at the local, area, and state levels to build community capacity; and provide leadership/supervision and subject-matter expertise at the local, area, state, and national level.

The successful candidate will have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a wide variety of individuals and groups. The candidate will also have the ability to establish partnerships with community leaders. Cooperates with and informs Regional Directors, County Councils, County Extension Staff, Field Specialists, and Program Director of their projects and has a positive working relationship with staff and clients in assigned geographical and subject matter areas. Strong organizational skills are also a necessity as this position will be expected to work on multiple projects.

Field Specialist III: Master’s degree and 5 years of related experience.

For both levels: A degree must be in Agricultural Economics, Economics, Business, Finance, Management, Marketing, Agricultural Education or a related field and experience must at a comparable level directly related to the duties of the position.

Preferred Education and Experience

Master’s degree in an area stated above. Additional years of experience. Experience in the agri-business industry. Experience or training in crop and livestock economics. Experience in farm and agricultural business management areas. Experience communicating with a wide range of audiences, including agricultural clientele and the mass media.

Location (if other than Ames) Southwest Iowa

Additional Information

This position will serve Southwest Iowa through the counties of Adair, Adams, Cass, Clarke, Decatur, Fremont, Mills, Montgomery, Page, Pottawattamie, Ringgold, Taylor, and Union Counties. Base location will be at the Armstrong Research Farm in Lewis, Iowa.

This position requires travel throughout the area served to carry out Extension and Outreach responsibilities. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and access to their own transportation. The duties of this position require willingness to work evenings and weekends.
