Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

Economics – Ag in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University is seeking to fill one position as an Extension Program Specialist II or III.

This position will provide support in assembling, analyzing, reporting, and publishing economic outlook and marketing/management information related to the livestock and feedstuff industries. Specific responsibilities include conducting applied economic analysis and data evaluation, writing articles and working closely with faculty and staff to publish newsletters and special reports, supporting members in educational program development and by making presentations.

This position is expected to participate in grant and contract opportunities and be active in revenue generation. Programmatic leadership is provided through the Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension and Outreach. Subject matter leadership is provided through the College of Agriculture and Life Science’s Department of Economics.

In addition to the duties above, an Extension Program Specialist III will be expected to create and deliver more comprehensive and complex communications and outreach materials; identify and implement innovative ways to meet clients’ needs; take an active role in the development of interdisciplinary curriculum; and provide leadership/supervision and subject-matter expertise.

The successful candidate will possess the ability to determine program priorities through evaluation and outcomes assessment; possess a strong interest in developing expertise in one or more of these sections/commodities: hogs/pork, cattle/beef, feed grains; ability to communicate both orally and in writing with individuals and groups complex economic issues to a public audience; strong technical writing skills in developing economic analysis reports and fact sheets for producer audiences; and ability to establish partnerships with leaders in Iowa agriculture. Strong organizational skills are also necessary as this position will work on multiple projects and reports.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and related experience.

Supplemental Required Education and Experience

The requirements above are for the Extension Program Specialist II.

The requirements for the Extension Program Specialist III: Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 2 years of related experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

Experience with USDA data and information sources.

Experience with price risk management tools.

Experience that demonstratives knowledge of management, marketing, and policy issues in the U.S. livestock industry.

Additional Information

All accrued vacation must be taken during the term of this appointment. Unused vacation will be forfeited.

One year term with eligibility for renewal.
