Job Description:

The Department of Agronomy in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University is seeking candidates for the position of Agricultural Specialist II. The position will be an individual contributor in the soybean and legume breeding and genetics group to help conduct field and lab research and breeding experiments related to a cultivar and germplasm development program. This project involves an interdisciplinary team of researchers from several ISU departments, including Agronomy, Plant Pathology, Entomology, and Engineering, who are working together to develop field ready cultivars for farmers and are also involved in conducting field and lab-based research on soybean and legume crops.

This position will be responsible for conducting field and lab tests using established methods of research. Duties will include field level research, including working with and maintaining agriculture machinery and equipment for research scale plots for planting, crop management and harvest. The incumbent will also manage field experiments, including appropriate mechanical and chemical measures, to obtain high quality experimental data, data collection, data management and analysis using handheld devices and commercial software. Plant hybridization, seed processing (pre – and post-harvest), assist in plant selections, contribute on research protocols, and progress reports are also responsibilities of this position. The incumbent will be expected to modify procedures to meet specific research / experiment needs and train / supervise students on the use of equipment and in lab operations. Travel to off-site locations within Iowa is needed during the crop season and some overnight travel during harvest.

The successful candidate will have excellent written and interpersonal communication skills to assist in report preparation and to effectively interact with and inform staff, graduate students, undergraduate student employees, and collaborators. The candidate will have a strong ability to direct and guide employees and cooperators; be detail-oriented; and possess the ability to manage multiple, ongoing tasks. The candidate will also be self-motivated and capable of working independently when required. All department members are expected to interact collegially and in a professional manner and maintain the highest standards of integrity and ethics.

This is a regular Professional & Scientific position with a fixed term. The position is renewable dependent on funding and satisfactory job performance. All accrued vacation must be used during term of appointment or will be forfeited.
